Creativity in Virgo
Harnessing that grounding force to transform ideas to polished works
There’s a unique energy that Virgos bring to creativity. Creativity usually glamorized as a chaotic, free-spirited, and passionate expression of the self, can still find usefulness in adding Virgo’s strengths of refinement, structure, and discipline in the creative process. The Virgo archetype holds perfection very near and dear. But that energy needs to be used wisely, otherwise you’re stuck in a loop of revisions and editing, and end up with creative fatigue.
Creativity is often associated with free-spiritedness and chaos, but Virgo brings a grounding force that can help transform ideas into tangible, polished works. The Virgo archetype is known for their precision, refinement, and craft. As a Virgo rising, I feel particularly equipped to writing this piece and can say with certainty, if you’re a creative, you’re going to want to sprinkle some Virgo energy into your craft. The Creativity in Virgo Guide is here to guide you!
Virgo the sixth sign of the zodiac, is ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, intellect, and reasoning. This gives Virgo a sharp mind, critical thinking skills, and ability to express themselves clearly. As an Earth sign, Virgos are truly grounded, practical, and focused, making it easy for them to be materially conscious, organized, and productive. Virgo is also represented by the Virgin, a symbol of purity, independence, and self-wholeness in the sense that you don’t need external validation for a sense of completeness.
While the Virgo energy does lean heavily towards seeking perfection, symbolized by the purity of the Virgin, the goal of perfection should be considered the drive but not the destination. Perfection should be detached from the piece and instead should encompass the artistic journey of going from ideation to creating a tangible piece of work. Having gone through the editing process and stopping the process when you reach your highest potential versus your idealized perception of the perfect piece, and then pushing the send button, or the publish button is perfection. Because in the grand universal scheme of things, Universe or Spirit only wish for you to create and put forth something that speaks in your voice and echos the beats of your heart in paint or poetry or song.
In order not to fall into Virgo’s archetypical weaknesses of being an overcritical workaholic with a bit of anxiety as it strives for this mirage of perfection (which we just spoke about not doing), think of how the art you create serves a greater purposely connecting to the goddess Astraea.
Another source of inspiration for creatives is the story of the goddess Astraea, pictured above. She was the celestial virgin goddess of justice, innocence, purity and the last immortal to live with humans from the Golden Age. She left the Earth during the Iron Age, when humans were not being very mindful but quite corruptive, to become the constellation of Virgo and it is believed that she will return, bringing with her the return of the utopian Golden Age. 1
Her story is a reminder of that loss of idealism and the tension it plays against reality. The disillusionment of the ideal world and that first eye opening reality moment is quite harsh but also a universal experience and part of our growth. It is worth looking at that moment in our lives as inspiration for our art this Virgo season.
As the goddess of justice, we can be inspired by her to create works of art that reflect to humanity a more just world. Our art can be explore societal issues and be a moral voice in the conversations of our time. Adding this depth to our work adds to its meaning and can become a personal exploration of our values.
Her ascension to the heavens is also a source of inspiration as we look at our work. Her story story encourages creatives to see our work as a vehicle for personal or collective transformation. You can even look at the creative journey itself, where ideas and raw materials are shaped into something transcendent. During this Virgo season, think about creating from a deeper source within so that you may alchemize past experiences.
Virgo, the goddess Astraea’s story can help us create works of art that are not only grounded in our human experience but also connect us with the divine. This Virgo season, the exploration of our creativity begins as a journey within and ends as an outward expression in the form of a finished pieces of art.
